US Cement market to decline in first half of 2023

Data released by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) shows that total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico are estimated at about 10.5 million tons in June 2023, down slightly from June 2022.

The top producing states in June 2023, in descending order, were: Texas; Missouri; California; Michigan; and Florida. These states accounted for 40% of cement production.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 6.3 million tons in June 2023, down 8.3% from June 2022. Cumulative 6-month production totaled an estimated 35.8 million tons, down 3.2% from the same period in 2022. The top clinker producing states in June 2023, in descending order, were Texas, California, Missouri, Florida, and Alabama.

The top cement consuming states, also in descending order, were: Texas; California; Florida; Ohio; and Illinois, accounting for 37% of total shipments in June 2023. In the first 6 months of 2023, exports are estimated at 51.0 million tons, a slight decrease compared to the same period in 2022.
